Jameson Marvin

conductor & teacher

On July 1, 2010, I retired after 32 years as Director of Choral Activities, Senior Lecturer on Music at Harvard University. I am delighted with my “new life” (not unlike my “old life”): conducting, teaching, composing, editing, arranging choral music – with some free time!

Over the past 32 years I have been inspired and enriched by my Harvard students through conducting and teaching the Harvard Glee Club, Radcliffe Choral Society, and Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. These ensembles have been immensely rewarding.  My full repertoire for men's, women's, mixed, and choral-orchestral music is available on this site. Some 50 of my Harvard singers went on to earn advanced degrees in Choral Music & Conducting, and now direct collegiate choral programs throughout the United States.

I am energized by the opportunity to conduct, and to teach future choral conductors: graduates and undergraduates at major universities who plan to enter the choral field. Under the Teaching and Conducting sections I list varied topics that I would offer to choral programs, to choral students, and to choirs in colleges and universities throughout the U.S.

I am equally interested in guest conducting Choral-Orchestral masterworks (some 80 are listed on my CV), and chamber choirs performing Renaissance and Baroque Music. The A Cappella gems from the 15th through the 21st centuries dot the landscape of my repertoires for men’s, women’s, and mixed choirs, and I offer my experience with these ensembles as a Guest Conductor of Choral Festivals and Honors Choirs.

I look forward to guest teaching and/or conducting through Residencies offering Seminars, Symposia, Workshops, Lecture-Demonstrations, Sabbatical Leave or Interim Replacements. The nature of the appointment might range from a few days to a few weeks, a month, or a semester.

Welcome!

“Through his musical precision, captivating conducting, and galvanizing leadership, Jameson Marvin taught us more about music – and life – than almost anyone else at Harvard.”
